Happy Saturday & National Pecan Pie Day!

We're back in action and ready to cash some tickets with the NYRA! That's right, we're staying in New York and playing the ponies at Saratoga. This weekend marks the official opening of Saratoga, following the conclusion of Belmont at Saratoga. Today's card features a total of 12 races, including two stakes races, and there’s quite a bit of water on the track. We'll discuss the forecast shortly.

Today’s featured race is the 11th of the day, the $500,000 Diana, which is a Grade One route on the inner turf. There are a limited number of runners in this race, and one has already scratched, leaving us with only five starters. More details on the Diana stakes will follow.

The weather today looks beautiful, with highs in the mid-80s and sunny skies. We did experience rain overnight, so the track is starting out sloppy, and the turf is yielding. While the larger races are set to be on the turf, some races may be moved off turf to ensure the conditions hold up for the featured race. We hope the track dries out with the warm weather, leading to some speed in the middle of the card. Be sure to check your tickets before you leave the window due to all the scratches we've seen.

The Diana Stakes is one of the oldest and most prestigious turf races for fillies and mares in the United States. First run in 1939 at Saratoga Race Course in New York, it was originally contested on dirt before switching to turf in 1973, where it found its identity as a premier grass race. Named after the Roman goddess of the hunt, the Diana has been a proving ground for elite female turf horses and has attracted some of the sport’s biggest names. In 2003, it was elevated to Grade I status, solidifying its position at the top of the division. Over the decades, champions such as Shuvee, Forever Together, and Sistercharlie have graced its winner’s circle. In recent years, trainer Chad Brown has dominated the race, winning a record nine times through 2024. The Diana remains a highlight of the Saratoga summer meet, blending tradition, top-class competition, and tactical brilliance.
