Happy Saturday & National Garlic Day! 🧄
It's the weekend, which means it's time to head to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for a day at Oaklawn Race Course. It has been a quiet time for us at the track as we eagerly await the final decisions on the Kentucky Derby field. We did have a card for you on Thursday from Gulfstream Park, but we only managed to hit one top pick winner and a few second pick winners. As a result, we didn’t provide you with enough information to cash many tickets.
We’re looking to turn that around today with a 12-race card, featuring three stakes races. The highlight of the day comes in the 11th race, the $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap. This is a Grade II stakes race for horses four years old and up, contested on Oaklawn's dirt track at a distance of 1 and 1/8 miles. You'll recognize several names from the Derby trails over the past three years, including Skippylongstocking, First Mission, Disarm, and Red Route One. There are eight runners in total, all with stakes racing experience, although only a few have competed in this caliber of stakes race.
The rain has cleared out of the area, and tomorrow's forecast predicts highs in the low 80s with cloudy skies. This will lead to a fast track and an excellent day of racing.

The Oaklawn Handicap is a prestigious American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Oaklawn Park Race Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas, since its inauguration in 1946. Originally established to attract top older horses, the race quickly grew in prominence and has consistently drawn elite competitors from across the country. Run over 1 1/8 miles on dirt, the Oaklawn Handicap has been a key stop on the spring racing calendar and often serves as a stepping stone to other major races like the Stephen Foster and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Over the decades, it has been won by some of the sport’s most notable horses, including champions like Cigar and Gun Runner, further cementing its status as a cornerstone of American handicap racing.
