KY Derby & Oaks Prep Races 🏇🏾// Sat., Feb. 1, 2025

Fink

Happy Saturday & National Baked Alaska Day!

Let’s keep the excitement going as we turn our attention to the East Coast! We have two derby prep races and one oaks prep race that will hold your interest all afternoon.

First, we head to Queens, New York, for the NYRA-sponsored race at Aqueduct Racecourse, where 20-10-6-4-2 points will be awarded towards the leaderboard. This race features seven runners, with only two of them having earned points so far: Omaha Omaha and Mo Quality, each with five points. A win by any horse in this race will move them into the top 10, and it gives the two participants with points a chance to land in the top three. The weather in New York today will be cold, with highs in the mid-30s, but the rain has stopped, and the track is fast.

Next, we travel to Hallandale Beach, Florida, for the Derby and Oaks prep races at Gulfstream Park. Although there has been much discussion about the future of this track, it continues to run year-round, hosting some of the top races during these cold and wet winter months.

In the 11th race, we have our derby prep, once again awarding 20-10-6-4-2 points to the top finishers. Seven horses will be competing in this race. Notably, Saffie Joseph Jr. has two horses entered, and he has a strong record at his home track, with only one of these entries having previously earned prep points. All three of our analysts believe that Saffie and his colt, Ferocious, can break into the top three of the standings after today’s race.

Following the derby prep, the fillies will take the track for our lone Oaks prep race, which will feature 11 runners and also award 20-10-6-4-2 points toward the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard. Once again, Saffie Joseph Jr. will have two horses in this race, aiming to secure a strong position on both leaderboards. Only one horse, Brad Cox's Eclatant, has earned points for the Oaks so far. Expect some movement in the leaderboard today, as the winner could either take the top spot or tie with four others based on the race results.

In Florida, the weather is quite different, with highs in the low 80s and partly sunny skies, leading to a fast track for today's prep races.
