Happy Saturday & National Espresso Day! āļø
We are back in the saddle and the caffeine intake is complete which will get us through the entire card! Don't mind the shaky hands as I type we are a few espresso deep this morning. We are excited to be back in the Big Easy as we head to New Orleans for the Fairgrounds Race Course opening weekend. Opening day was yesterday, which always brings excitement, but we wanted to wait and dive into the first huge day of racing to ensure we did our due diligence with this packed card. We have ten total races, four stakes, over $700K in purses, and lottsa runners today. So while you grab some beignets and espresso, make sure you get those tickets ready as well using our Lundin Line as we are ready to cash them all day long! If you can't tell, we are excited to have another track to pick from in a location that will not be freezing each week and should limit the amount of scratches and cancelled days as we move into the cold months.
Today's weather is going to be better than most the country as we will see highs in the mid 60s with sunny skies. As of the writing of this post we have a fast track and firm turf to keep this awesome opening weekend headed in the right direction!
A quick history of the track from Wikipedia:
Fair Grounds Race Course, often known as New Orleans Fair Grounds, is a thoroughbred racetrack and racino in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is operated by Churchill Downs Louisiana Horseracing Company, LLC.
The Carrollton Race Course was completed in 1837 and advertised in The Picayune, holding two races on March 14, 1837, under The Louisiana Jockey Club. In 1838 Bernard de Marigny, Julius C Branch and Henry Augustine Tayloe, organized races at the Louisiana or Carrollton Race Course, laid out on Gentilly Road, making it the second oldest site of horseracing in America still in operation, after Freehold Raceway and before the Saratoga Race Course. It began on April 10 and lasted for five days.[1] In 1852 it was renamed the Union Race Course. In 2009, the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for 65 Thoroughbred racetracks in North America. Of the top Fifteen, New Orleans Fair Grounds was ranked #12, behind Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, Louisiana, which was ranked #6.

"The word espresso (/ÉĖsprÉsoŹ/; Italian pronunciation: [e ĖsprÉsso]) in Italian means 'quick in time.' Before the advent of the espresso machine, espresso was simply a coffee expressly made for the person ordering it. It was also made with recently roasted and freshly ground beans. The cup was brewed shortly before serving. In the late 1800s, this practice was commonplace in cafĆ©s and restaurants."
