Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸 & National Blueberry Cheesecake Day! 🫐
We are back at the track and ready to celebrate with a day of horse racing at Santa Anita Park. On Saturday, we enjoyed great success with five top pick winners and one second pick winner, resulting in an impressive return on investment for those top picks. We managed to hit winners in races 3 through 8, so if you had the right ticket structure, you may have had a solid payday.
Today's card features a total of 11 races, including three stakes races, and a large field of runners. The highlight of the day is the eighth race, the Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes. This race is a 1¼ mile route on dirt with a purse of $200,000. There are seven runners entered, and among them is the highly talked-about horse, Skippylongstocking. He has participated in some of the biggest races in the country over the last three years and is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who has multiple graded stakes victories in his career.
This race is nestled between two exciting Grade 1 turf races. By the time we reach the start of the card, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s with mostly sunny skies, making it a great day to be at the track. We anticipate a fast track and firm turf conditions throughout the day.
The Gamely Stakes was inaugurated in 1939 as the Long Beach Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack, the event was dormant until 1968 when it was revived and later renamed in 1976 to honor the exceptional race mare Gamely, who had passed away the previous year. Gamely, a Hall of Fame inductee, was celebrated for her remarkable performances in the late 1960s, including victories in the Vanity Handicap and the Beldame Stakes. The race achieved Grade I status in 1983, reflecting its significance in the racing calendar. Following the closure of Hollywood Park in 2013, the Gamely Stakes found a new home at Santa Anita Park, where it continues to attract top turf females competing over a distance of miles .
The Shoemaker Mile Stakes, a prestigious Grade I turf race for older horses, has a storied history rooted in California horse racing. Originally inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack as the Premiere Handicap, the race was renamed in 1990 to honor Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker, who had a legendary career and was closely associated with Hollywood Park. After the closure of Hollywood Park in 2013, the race was relocated to Santa Anita Park, where it continues to attract some of the best turf milers in the country. Over the years, the Shoemaker Mile has served as an early-season showcase for turf talent and has helped propel numerous contenders toward the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
