Happy Saturday & National Caramel Popcorn Day 🍿
Stop two on today's derby prep trail brings us to Lexington, KY, and Keeneland race track. We had a so-so day yesterday here as our top-rated horses hit a few nice winners so we hope you cashed some tickets with us. Today marks day two of the spring meet and features a win and in Kentucky Derby prep race where 100-50-25-15-10 points will be awarded. The featured race is race 10, the G1 Bluegrass stakes. This is a 9 furlong route over the dirt with a purse of $1,000,000. The winner of this race won't have to travel far as Churchill Downs is a little over an hour away. The last horse to have success in the Bluegrass and also win the Derby was Street Sense in 2007. He finished 2nd by a nose in the Bluegrass which shows how vital this race is to charting a path to success for the first Saturday in May. All but two horses in today's field already have derby prep points but two horses can place themselves on top of the ranks with a win today, Dornoch (#4) and Sierra Leone (#10). Both horses are probably already in the starting gate next month so will the trainer want to be looked at as the top horse to contend at the derby, or will they sit back and use this as a warm-up and be content with knowing they are headed to Lousiville either way?
Today's card has 11 races, 5 stakes, and lottsa runners for building tickets. There is no Oaks prep as that was yesterday, it was a phenomenal race and I suggest you go back and watch the replay, but that does not mean there is no excitement as all five stakes are graded stakes with two being G1. The weather is cooperating nicely as we will have clear skies with highs in the upper 50s meaning we have a fast track and good turf. Make sure to check out our top-rated from earlier at Aqueduct as the prep season is in full swing up in New York.
