Pimlico Race Course šŸ‡šŸ¾ // Fri., May 17th, 2024

Happy Friday & Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Day!

On this Preakness Eve, our celebrated Lundin LIne is back in "The Old Line State" for an amazing 14-race card the folks at Pimlico Race Course put together, which is highlighted by the 100th running of the "The Second Jewel of the Filly Triple Crown.", that being the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (R13). This G2 1 1/8 race on dirt for 3-year fillies will offer a purse of 300K. Inaugurated in 1919 as the Pimlico Oaks, it was renamed in 1952 to its present name to complement the Preakness Stakes and to acknowledge the Maryland State flower. The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes serves as one of three races that are basically distaff counterparts to the Triple Crown races, along with the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and the Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park.

Fun Fact: Davona Dale is the only filly to win the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, Mother Goose Stakes, and Coaching Club American Oaks.

In addition to the Black-Eyed Susan, there are five other Stakes Races, including the G3 150K Miss Preakness S. in R10 and 250K Pimlico Special S. in R12. Today's 9th race is the 100k Hilltop S. Why the HIlltop? Well - The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a slight rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred trainers and race enthusiasts. (yeah - count that as a bonus Fun Fact)

Black-Eyed Susans - the State Flower of Maryland

Maryland (The Old Line State):

According to some historians, General George Washington bestowed the name "Old Line State,"Ā  associating Maryland with its regular line troops (the Maryland Line) who served courageously in many Revolutionary War battles.
