Happy Saturday & National Day of the Horse 🐓

Did you know the Kentucky Derby is only 20 weeks away!? It may seem like a long time, but 20 weeks ago was July 25th, and you thought the Los Alamitos Futurity was so far away. Now we head to the track in So Cal, to Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Track, to play the ponies and hand out more Kentucky Derby points to the top horses.

Last week we started off hot with three winners to kick off the card, but then cooled off and ended with five of 12 top-pick winners and one second-pick winner as well. Not a terrible day, but after two weeks ago when Mr. W hit all his top-pick winners, we were hoping for another superb performance. We are not quitters, though, and we’re ready to help you cash some tickets today.

The featured race today is the eighth, the $200k Los Alamitos Futurity, a 1 1/16-mile route on the dirt for two-year-olds only. Each owner, trainer, and jockey is hoping their horse will ride into glory on the first Saturday in May and win the Run for the Roses. Today’s top five finishers will earn 10-5-3-2-1 points toward the Derby leaderboard. While this is not a ā€œwin and you’re in,ā€ picking up points now could be valuable as we get closer to the final leaderboard—especially if you’re on the outside looking in and another horse’s connections decline an invitation to run in the Kentucky Derby.

The weather in Arcadia today will be pretty typical for this time of year, with highs in the low 70s and partly cloudy skies. If you need a pick-me-up from the gloomy weather in your area, fire up your favorite horse racing app—or TV channel that carries it—and take a look at today’s card. The sun (and a few winners) could change your life.

"Each year 20 horses have the once in a lifetime chance to run in the Kentucky Derby. To earn a spot in the starting gate, they must travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of designated races at tracks across the country and around the world. Points are awarded to the top five finishers in each race. The 20 horses with the most points will earn a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May."

200K Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)/DP

1 1/16 Miles on Dirt for 2 Yr. Olds (G2)

KY Derby Prep / Pts = 10-5-3-2-1

The Los Alamitos Futurity is a premier Grade I Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, California. Inaugurated in 1981, the race is contested at 1 1/16 miles on dirt and is restricted to two-year-olds, making it an important early test of future classic contenders. Formerly known as the Hollywood Futurity when held at Hollywood Park, the race was moved to Los Alamitos after Hollywood Park closed in 2013. The Futurity has produced several notable winners who later became stars, including Best Pal and American Pharoah, the latter using his 2014 victory as a springboard to a historic Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic sweep.
