Happy Saturday, National Daiquiri Day 🍹& Haskell Stakes Day🏇
We are excited to be back at one of our favorite tracks today, as the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is back in action! We are staying closer to home than usual and will be wagering on the races from La Jolla, CA, and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Opening day at Del Mar is a thrilling event for horse players, as this venue is arguably the most prominent California track and consistently offers attractive betting pools.
If you’ve never been, Del Mar is one of the most beautiful locations in the state, with nearly perfect weather year-round. Today, we are covering the full card at Del Mar and providing our picks for the Haskell at Monmouth Park. This race features the return of the only horse to have won a Triple Crown race and competed in all three races this year. Although Journalism has performed well, he has been bested by Sovereignty twice and aims to prove why so many people supported him throughout the Triple Crown season. The Haskell race is scheduled for 2:45 PM Pacific Time, which means it will occur between the second and third races at Del Mar.
On the West Coast today, we have a total of 11 races, including two stakes races and plenty of runners to choose from. The featured race at Del Mar is the ninth, the $200,000 San Clemente Handicap. This race will be a one-mile route on the turf course for three-year-old fillies only.
Typically, I would say we are headed to sunny Southern California, but today will start off cloudy and then transition to mostly sunny, with highs in the low 70s. This weather is typical for this area at this time of year, and it promises to be a beautiful day. The track is expected to be fast and in great condition. In Oceanport, NJ, it will be a bit warmer with highs in the low 80s and cloudy skies, with rain predicted later, so be prepared for that.
The Haskell Stakes, inaugurated in 1968 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, began as a handicap race and was named in honor of Amory L. Haskell, the former president and chairman of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club. Originally run as the Haskell Invitational Handicap, the race evolved into a premier summer event for three-year-olds, especially those emerging from the Triple Crown trail. In 1981, it became an invitational race, drawing top contenders from across the country. Over the decades, the Haskell has gained Grade I status and produced champions such as American Pharoah, Rachel Alexandra, and Authentic, solidifying its reputation as a major test for elite sophomores.
