Happy Sunday & National Chicken Fried Steak Day!
The Kentucky Derby prep season is gaining momentum as horse racing intensifies. Next week, the spotlight shifts to the Breeders' Cup, which ushers in a new season for younger horses while concluding the current campaign for older runners. This week, the action unfolds at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Derby. Today’s card features 11 races, including two key Oaks and Derby prep events showcasing the next wave of promising contenders. Both preps award qualifying points to the top finishers: 10 for first, followed by 5, 3, 2, and 1. The eighth race spotlights two-year-old fillies in the $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile dirt test. We'll see if any early Oaks hopefuls can earn enough points to secure a spot in May’s starting gate. Catch the action around 1:25 pm Pacific. The tenth race, the Street Sense Stakes, is another 1 1/16-mile dirt challenge with a $200,000 purse. Seven colts are entered, as the fillies will have run earlier. While next week’s prep winner could emerge as the early Derby favorite, every point earned today helps a horse lock in a place for the Derby on the first Saturday in May. Racing begins at about 2:25 pm Pacific. The weather is expected to start rainy but should improve, with highs in the upper 50s and cloudy skies. Currently, the track is fast and the turf is firm.
Street Sense, born in 2004, is a bay colt by Street Cry out of the mare Bedazzle, bred by James B. Tafel. Trained by Carl Nafzger, he made history in 2007 as the first horse ever to win both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (2006) and the Kentucky Derby, showcasing his rare combination of early brilliance and classic stamina. Ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, Street Sense won the Derby with a thrilling rail-skimming ride and later added the Grade 1 Travers Stakes to his résumé. After retiring from racing in 2008, he became a successful sire at Darley Stud, producing multiple graded stakes winners and continuing his influence on American Thoroughbred bloodlines.
